Chantilly is an industrious and affordable town 25 miles outside of Washington D.C. in western Fairfax County. As the 40th largest community in Virginia, Chantilly is significantly smaller than the other most popular Northern Virginia neighborhoods with a population of about 25,000 people. This reputable, suburban community was once rated one of the best places to retire by U.S. News and World Report. Families love Chantilly for its abundance of beautiful homes, top rated schools, growing job market, and convenient amenities. Chantilly is home to Dulles International Airport and an extension of the National Air and Space Museum.
Chantilly also hosts the headquarters of the National Reconnaissance Office which is considered one of the top five U.S. intelligence agencies. It designs, builds, and operates the country’s spy satellites and provides intelligence to the National Security Administration. Route 50 and Route 28 intersect in Chantilly, providing easy access to the Dulles Technology Corridor, Tysons Corner, and other major employment centers in Northern Virginia. Chantilly is not connected to the Metro, but a quick drive on I-66 can take residents to the closest Metro station in Vienna.
In the 1700s, Chantilly was home to a number of colonial plantations. The two most notable plantations were the Chantilly Plantation — which lent its name to the town — and the Sully Plantation, which is now the Sully Historic Site. During the Civil War, the area now known as Chantilly suffered while occupied by Northern forces. Many farms, manors, and homes were burned or destroyed by Federal troops in 1863, including the Chantilly Plantation. The town then focused on rebuilding throughout the remainder of the 19th century, helped along by the construction of the Little River Turnpike. However, Chantilly remained a small, rural town until the 1980s. Commercial and residential developers began filling in the farmland south of Dulles Airport with businesses, shopping centers, and subdivisions, and ultimately transformed it into the Washingtonian suburb it is today.
