Learn about Living in McLean

The community of Mclean wasn’t officially established until 1910. The town was named after the former owner and publisher of the Washington Post, John Mclean, who was very influential in the region. Along with Jean Pierre Guenard, John Mclean built the electric railroad that connected the community to Washington D.C. Like many other Northern Virginia neighborhoods, Mclean is an area rich in Civil War history, but it was also involved in the War of 1812. The notable estate of Salona gave refuge to James Madison as British troops burned the capital city and also served as the headquarters for Union generals during the Civil War. One of the most historic sites in Mclean is Hickory Hill, an estate built in 1870 in the place of a farmhouse that burned down after the Civil War. President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and their family lived there for a time along with nine other prestigious families. The home still stands today, preserved as a historic structure.
