Mclean is a beautiful, safe, rural-based community in Northern Virginia. Consistently rated one of the best neighborhoods to live and raise a family, Mclean is one of the fastest growing suburban communities in the country with just under 55,000 residents. The community is predominantly known for its large, luxury homes and upscale shopping centers. Mclean has a vibrant business community and a median annual income over three times the national average. The area is home to the CIA Headquarters and several large corporations like Hilton and Booz Allen Hamilton.
Mclean is sandwiched between the Potomac River and the town of Vienna, only 10 miles west of Washington D.C. Residents can travel to the nearby neighborhoods of Arlington, Falls Church, Great Falls, and Reston by I-66, Route 7, or I-495, or catch the Metro into the capital at the Tysons East station. Home buyers who value comfortable living and their privacy choose Mclean for its prestigious real estate, quiet streets, high quality of life, and easy commute to the district.
The community of Mclean wasn’t officially established until 1910. The town was named after the former owner and publisher of the Washington Post, John Mclean, who was very influential in the region. Along with Jean Pierre Guenard, John Mclean built the electric railroad that connected the community to Washington D.C. Like many other Northern Virginia neighborhoods, Mclean is an area rich in Civil War history, but it was also involved in the War of 1812. The notable estate of Salona gave refuge to James Madison as British troops burned the capital city and also served as the headquarters for Union generals during the Civil War. One of the most historic sites in Mclean is Hickory Hill, an estate built in 1870 in the place of a farmhouse that burned down after the Civil War. President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and their family lived there for a time along with nine other prestigious families. The home still stands today, preserved as a historic structure.
